Shevel Desensitisation Procedure (SDP)

Most headache and migraine pain occurs when the brain receives pain signals from other anatomical structures. Very often these pain signals come from the tendons that connect the neck muscles to the skull at the back of the head. When the pain signals from these tendons are numbed the headache pain ceases.

The desensitisation procedure, is a very precise procedure that uses a cautery needle to permanently numb the pain signals from these tendons, while allowing the tendons to continue to function normally. It is done under local anaesthesia and takes around 20 - 45 mins.
This headache treatment has a exceptionally high success rate and in most patients it can permanently eliminate headache pain. Dr Shevel pioneered this treatment after decades of research. This treatment is only available at The Headache Clinic in Johannesburg and every month patients come from around the world to receive this desensitisation treatment.

Posture Modifying Appliance (PMA)

The PMA is a thin and comfortable custom-made plate worn against the palate. The PMA adjusts the tongue position, which in turn relaxes the jaw, and then the muscles around the temples, cascading relaxation in the muscles all the way down to the neck and back.

This re-calibration of the muscle equilibrium modifies the patients posture. This is where the appliance, designed by Dr. Shevel, derives its name. Once equilibrium is restored and all the contributing muscles have relaxed, the pain dissipates and harmony is restored.

Arterial Surgery

When arteries are indicated as the primary source of pain, Dr. Shevel’s diagnostic method allows for these tiny problem arteries to be accurately located and then closed. In many patients closing these small arteries provides immediate relief. The procedure is minimally invasive and done under local anesthetic.

Comprehensive & Accurate Diagnosis

Successful treatment of migraine and other headaches such as cluster headaches and tension headaches depends upon the accurate diagnosis of the source of the pain. The unique diagnostic techniques developed by Dr Shevel over thirty years enable our doctors to accurately pinpoint where the pain originates. Once an accurate diagnosis has been established, treatment can be directed to the source of the pain. Our aim at The Headache Clinic is to achieve lasting pain relief for all our patients. This possible in most cases using the treatment methods developed by Dr Shevel. (Importantly, We do not use medication to treat headaches).

We achieve our excellent treatment results with Dr. Shevel’s unique and comprehensive diagnosis protocol that accurately determines each patient’s individual pain map. The accuracy of the diagnosis allows us to pinpoint the structures that are responsible for causing the pain and these structures become the focus of our unique headache treatments. Dr Shevels qualifications as a Dentist, Medical Doctor, and specialist Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon has allowed him to develop medication-free treatments that offer permanent relief from these painful structures.

Our sophisticated diagnosis examines all of the possible anatomical structures that can generate headache and migraine pain including: Muscle tension, arterial dilatation, and tendon and nerve sensitivity

Complete Diagnosis takes up to 3 – 4 hours and includes:

Neurological Assessment - Check for clear signs of brain disease
Pain Relief Injections - If you have a headache during diagnosis.
Specialist Nurse Consultation - headache history, symptoms, triggers
X-Rays - jaw, face and neck
Electromyograph - to read muscle tension
Thermal Imaging - to detect arterial inflammation
Doctor: comprehensive presentation of diagnostic results
Doctor: Physical Examination to locate painful structures

Types Of Migraines & Headaches That We Diagnose And Treat

Most headache sufferer's pain does not originate in the brain, but from the structures outside the skull (muscles, tendons, arteries and nerves). Fortunately for headache and migraine sufferers, these pain causing structures are easy to access for both diagnosis and treatment.

*We do not treat brain diseases or brain tumors

Treatment of headaches at The Headache Clinic is based on identification of the underlying structural causes.
Tension Headache
It can cause mild, moderate,  pain behind your eyes and in your head and neck. It might feel as though a tight band is wrapped around your forehead.
The medical team at The Headache clinic treats on average 100 new patients each month.
Cluster Headache
An extremely painful type of headache that is often concentrated behind the eye. These headaches are often seasonal & can occur with long pain free periods between cluster cycles.
The Headache Clinic's success rate is related directly to their research and innovation.
Migraine
Migraine headaches may be throbbing, on one side of your head that gets worse with physical activity, and that is usually accompanied by nausea and/or vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.
The Headache Clinic provides unique pain treatment methods that get results.
Sinus Headache
Sinus headaches are headaches that feel as though they originate from the sinuses. Having a cold or allergies increases your risk of sinus infections and headaches.
Dr Elliot Shevel has published more than thirty scientific studies in national and international peer reviewed medical journals.
Hormonal Headache
Women commonly experience headaches that are linked to hormonal fluctuations. These can be successfully prevented without using hormone therapy.
Dr Shevel is a Maxillo-Facial and Oral surgeon.
Medication Overuse Headache

MOH are frequent headaches in someone who has a pre-existing headache disorder who has been taking acute medication to relieve symptoms.
